Summary Background Large skin defects caused by trauma (e.g., burns) or due to other reasons tumor-related resections) require sufficient replacement. The constant improvement of innovative methods replacement and expansion mean that even burn victims with more than 80% body surface burned have a realistic chance survival. Due these new developments, not only has survival rate increased, but also quality life increased tremendously over the past decades. Methods aim this review is present an overview current standards future trends concerning treatment defects. main focus placed on most important technologies trends. Results Autologous grafting was developed 3500 years ago. Several approaches techniques been discovered established in care plastic surgery since then. Great achievements were made during 19th 20th centuries. Many old are still part modern surgery. Today, autologous considered be gold standard for many wounds, developed, ranging from biological synthetic materials. Conclusion available which allow us concepts. All led reconstructive clockwork 21st century.
